Parenting is the most difficult and the most important job in the world. Yet no one gets trained to do this job. Everyone does as per their own understanding. Everyone is influenced by their own parents’ way of parenting – good, bad or ugly.
Parenting is a responsible act. Every parent usually remains an active parent for 25 to 30 years. Imagine a job one does for 25 years without a proper training.
These 25-30 years shape not only the future of your children but your own future. A child grown up out of a bad parenting will always remain a cause of concern for his parents.
Every couple before getting married must get trained on how to become a good parent. Parenting is an art and science. It is as much about psychology as much as it is about emotions.
Your failure to do a good job can have a huge negative impact on the world. On the other side, your success can make this world a better place to live.
The question is how to avoid bad parenting and become a good parent?
Here are some responsibilities of responsible parents:
1. A confident child
Your child should be confident to face the world.
“It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.” Frederick Douglass
Overprotection is dangerous. Overprotection makes a weak child. Give her some freedom and learn from mistakes. Making mistakes and learning from mistakes makes the child more confident.
Never failing and always winning attitude can make her a low ethics citizen. She would always want to win by hook or crook. Confidence comes from failing and trying again. Do not discourage failures, encourage attempts.
2. A healthy child
Raising a healthy child is a social responsibility of every parent. Many parents are careless about what their child eat. They are careless about her physical activities. They are careless about her time of eating and eating while watching TV.
“Among the most sacred gifts you can give your child is the gift of health. This gift is best given by example.” Dr. Rand Olson
An unhealthy child is not only a burden on the society but the child also suffers because of lack of responsible behaviour by parents.
3. An educated child
These days’ parents spend a whole lot of money on the education of their child. Formal education is necessary. But at the same time, the importance of informal education also should be emphasized.
“The aim of education is the knowledge, not of facts, but of values.” William S. Burroughs
Social service, music, literature, art and there are many more types of informal education which are important for the overall development of the child. A child should become an overall personality.
4. A sensitive child:
As mentioned by our Prime Minister in his Independence Day speech, every boy child must be sensitive towards the other gender. This thinking starts at home. Parents should ingrain the culture of respect for girls. This is the responsibility of parents to keep a watch on the behaviour of their sons.
5. A responsible child
A child should be responsible not only towards her own duties but towards her social and national responsibilities. In a country where breaking of laws is considered a proud act, raising a responsible child which makes him a responsible citizen is a critical responsibility of parents.
6. A financially secure child
Yes, having an insurance policy to secure the future of the child is one of the important responsibilities of every parent.
Once the child is on her own, she may not need security. But for her education, marriage and sustenance in case of untoward incidence happen in her life, securing the financial future is necessary.

7. An emotionally intelligent child
This is the need of our time. An emotionally weak child suffers in life. Howsoever you may spend on your child’s education and fulfill her wishes if your child is not emotionally intelligent, there is a problem.
Allow her to express his emotions. Parents usually don’t like a crying child. Crying is a feeling Let her vent out her feelings. Don’t compare her with others; don’t scold her in front of others. Talk with her when she is down. Don’t expect top ranks. Spend time with her to understand her feelings.
She will become emotionally stronger if you spend more time with her as a friend.
“And when your family shares a deeper intimacy and respect, problems between family members will seem lighter to bear.” John M. Gottman, Raising An Emotionally Intelligent Child
These are the responsibilities of every parent towards his child. Do it well and the world becomes a better place.
“Sociologists well understand that chaos at home causes violent behavior, educational failure and social alienation among children. Yet, many of us in America stay far, far away from this topic. That in itself is a national scandal. Bad parenting is gravely harming this nation.” Bill O’Reilly
